Data-use

Use of data by external groups

Code books describing the TRAILS data are available to third parties outside the TRAILS consortium via DANS EASY. The data are only available through TRAILS. The data are not freely accessible, but desired variables can be requested by means of a publication plan. External publication plans can only be submitted by researchers with a PhD degree.

Submitted publication plans will be assessed with regard to overlap with already published or approved publications. TRAILS consortium have the right to co-author external publications within their research domain.

Unless a postponement has been requested, the right to publish about the data expires if no manuscript has been submitted for publication after one year.

A contribution of € 2.500 is requested from external users (for non-commercial purposes only) as a contribution to the TRAILS infrastructure. This fee does not apply if a TRAILS participant is the last author.

External users who want to request TRAILS data must fill in the Publication plan TRAILS - External users. Conditions for external users can be found in the General conditions for the access to TRAILS by external users (version 2023).

For students who want to write a thesis, the data request must be submitted by a senior researcher.
